Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) Concrete Scan at Calgary Zoo - Calgary, Alberta

Ground Penetrating Radar Systems (GPRS) Enterprises Inc. of Calgary was recently contacted by the local zoo to perform GPR scanning during a renovation project. This project required to drill several cores on the roof of a building to install new drain pipes and cut to remove a portion of a slab-on-grade. A GPRS technician was assigned to work closely with the contractor to find suitable locations to core and cut the slabs without hitting any critical target. By using GPR technology, GPRS was able to determine the thickness of the slab and location of reinforcing steel, beam edges as well as precise location of other significant obstructions within the slabs.

This scanning was taken on the roof of a building. The slab consisted of 2 layers of rebar (6” at the bottom and 12” spacing on the top) along with a number of electrical conduits embedded within the slab. The contractor was planning to core drill a 4” hole through the slab at this location to install a new drain pipe. The pipe itself would be 3” with 8” flange at 1” deep. We were able to find a few clear areas where they met the design. The scanned areas were also swept with Radio detection (RD) equipment to verify the presence of power/ radio signals if any.

This is a picture of electrical conduits found within the proposed saw-cut area. Main power came from the front of the building then distributed throughout the floor in different directions. We were able to provide the client with the exact location of the lines as well as the depth within the slab. All these results were interpreted in real time and were clearly discussed with the client on-site. A map with all of the findings was also provided to the client right after the scanning completed.

Ground penetrating radar is a great tool to scan areas of post tension cables, rebar, and conduits, including PVC pipes and can also be used to locate underground utilities prior to cutting or excavating to reduce risk and costs associated with damages on job sites. GPR technology is also safe, accurate, and can mark out targets in real time.
