Concrete Scanning for Rebar Location Prior to Drilling for Anchors - Vancouver, British Columbia

GPRS Enterprises Inc. of British Columbia was contacted by a large General contractor who was planning on drilling anchor locations into multiple areas on a new ground up construction project. The first area was located on a floor slab at the corner of the building. Drilling had been attempted prior to scanning, and rebar was encountered in many of the drilling locations which delayed the project, and prompted the client to pursue scanning prior to moving forward. The pattern of rebar in the floor location (see below) was not easy to interpret, due to the existing metal plate and slab characteristics in the area of the scan. GPRS was able to decipher the rebar pattern in this area with careful inspection in around 15 minutes, and the results were marked on the slab along with depths in order to clearly communicate the bar locations to the driller. Other locations that were inspected on site for the same project included columns, a suspended slab (scanned from underside), and a structural concrete wall.

Concrete Scan for Rebar - Vancouver, British Columbia

The photo above shows the first slab on grade section that was scanned by GPRS. The small 2000 MHz “Palm” antenna and SIR 4000 computer can be seen as well. This small antenna allows us to get to within 2” of any wall, obstruction, and attached conduit, and greatly enhances the ground that we can cover in tight space situations. Each of our technicians arrives on site with this capable tool in their arsenal of equipment, and allows GPRS to maximize the accuracy and flexibility of our scanning.

The photo below shows one of the suspended slab survey sections, where you can see rebar marked in blue, along with drill holes that had been attempted prior to scanning. The attempted locations encountered rebar in 5 out of 9 of the total locations, which made this entire layout completely unusable. Scanning previous to the drilling could have saved this contractor time, money, man power, and drill bits.
